Description
This is a vintage, steel Cash Box by the Art Steel Company, New York. The antique metal box is marked with the name of the company and the initials ASCO shaped like a triangle. the antique cash drawer is an industrial or Army gunmetal green and could also have served as a document lock box. This old box has a handmade hold for dropping in coins or dollar bills without having to open it. It was used by my merchant grandparents in their country store which they started in the 1930s. I suspect it dates to that time as Art Steel opened in 1920 in the Bronx. Its in rustic condition, with scratches in the paint and steel showing through but the box and latch still open readily. A set of keys was in the box although there is no longer a lock attached. The old lock box measures about 10" x 7" x 4.5".
